The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams — and just two matchdays into the group stage, three nations have already booked their place in the Round of 32: Mexico, the United States and Germany. This article will be updated continuously as more teams confirm their spot, with the specific reason each team qualified early.
How the 32 Knockout Spots Are Decided
At World Cup 2026, 48 teams are split into 12 groups (A–L) of four. Once the group stage ends, 32 teams advance to the knockout rounds through:
- 24 automatic spots: the top 2 finishers in each of the 12 groups
- 8 wildcard spots: the 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups (ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, fair-play record, then a draw if still level)
The Round of 32 is scheduled to run from June 28 to July 3, 2026.
Teams Already Confirmed for the Round of 32
1. Mexico — first team through
Mexico (co-hosts, Group A) became the first nation to officially confirm their Round of 32 spot after winning both opening matches: 2-0 over South Africa and 1-0 over South Korea (the only goal coming from Luis Romo, backed by several key saves from goalkeeper Raúl Rangel). With a perfect 6 points from 2 games, Mexico didn’t just secure qualification — they locked up first place in Group A before the final round of fixtures.
Why so early: A perfect 2-2 record put them well clear of their group rivals.
2. United States — second team through
The USA (co-hosts, Group D) confirmed their place after a 2-0 win over Australia. The result guaranteed Mauricio Pochettino’s side a top-2 finish in Group D. After Paraguay went on to beat Türkiye in the group’s other fixture, the USA also locked up first place.
Why so early: Two wins from two with a clean sheet, while Türkiye — their closest rival — lost to Paraguay and could no longer catch them on points.
3. Germany — third team through
Germany (Group E) came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 (Deniz Undav scored twice, with the winner arriving in the 90+4th minute), securing a perfect 6 points from 2 games and an official Round of 32 berth. It’s the first time Germany have reached the World Cup knockout stage since lifting the trophy in 2014.
Why so early: A perfect 2-2 record guarantees Germany a top-2 finish in Group E regardless of their final group game result.
Teams in a Strong Position (Not Yet Confirmed)
- Brazil (Group C): beat Haiti 3-0 and currently top the group, but have not yet officially qualified.
- Japan (Group F): a win over Tunisia in matchday 2 would put them in pole position to advance.
- Netherlands (Group F): thrashed Sweden 5-1, significantly boosting their chances after an opening draw.
Teams Already Eliminated
- Haiti became the first team officially eliminated from World Cup 2026, after a 0-3 defeat to Brazil in their second Group C match.
- Türkiye (Group D): lost 0-1 to Paraguay in matchday 2, finishing with two defeats from two.
- Tunisia followed Haiti and Türkiye out the door despite having one group game still to play. After two rounds in Group F, Tunisia have zero points, having lost 1-5 to Sweden and 0-4 to Japan — ending any hope of advancing for the “Carthage Eagles.”
- In Group E, Ecuador’s path forward has also narrowed sharply after being held to a draw by Curaçao. Ecuador now need to beat Germany in their final group match to keep their qualification hopes alive.
